The 2023-24 FHS orchestra program currently consists of two separate orchestras, Chamber Orchestra and Concert orchestra. The FHS Chamber Orchestra is an audition-only group made up of 10-12 grade orchestra students. This orchestra travels and performs at festivals throughout the state, representing Flathead High School. The literature is varied and the expectations are high, as there are quite a few performances throughout the school year. The Concert Orchestra is primarily made up of 9th and 10th grade orchestra students. One of the primary purposes of the Concert Orchestra is to continue to develop basic string technique and hone it to a high level. More time is spent on reinforcing rehearsal skills as well as technical skills as there are a fewer performances during the year.
Both groups participate in all home concerts, as well as District Music Festival, which is held in April each year. The Chamber Orchestra travels each year to participate in the AA Orchestra Festival; this site rotates yearly throughout the state. The Chamber Orchestra members also have the opportunity to travel on tour every other year.
Members of both groups are encouraged to participate in the following extra-curricular musical activities: Montana All-State Orchestra, District/ State Solo/Ensemble Festival, All-Northwest Festival Orchestra and All-District Musicals.
