IB Course Description: Group 1 - English
ENGLISH 11 IB (HL)
** ENGLISH 11 IB (HL)
Credit: 1.0; Full year; Grade 11
Materials Fee: Only those students intending to seek the IB diploma or IB certificate(s) will have fees.
Prerequisite: English 10H and English 9H recommended.
Course Objectives: This course is open to any student intending to go to college and specifically meets the IB Full Diploma requirement for English A (Higher Level). The IB curriculum for grade 11 English focuses on close reading of literary texts and the development of the analytical skills of commentary on those texts. Using literature from a variety of time periods and continents, students will demonstrate their knowledge of the writers’ craft by offering written and oral critical commentaries in which detailed close readings of text provide the evidence for arguments of analysis and evaluation. Students will compare and contrast the works of different cultures, genres and time periods. Research writing, essay writing, timed essay writing, and oral presentations will be practiced and evaluated.
Summer Reading: One novel is required for summer reading. Students should ask the English teacher for the required reading assignment before leaving for summer break (or visit the FHS web page.)
Semester one works will include: Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, Cannery Row by John Steinbeck, Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse.
Semester two works will include: Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky, , Paradise of the Blind by Duong Thu Houng, and Silence by Shusaku EndoIn
In addition to serving as the first year of the IB curriculum for higher level English, this course counts for graduation purposes as one semester of literature and one semester of composition.

Credit: 1.0; Full year; Grade 12
Materials Fee: To earn the IB designation on higher level courses, students must take the IB external assessments.
Prerequisite: English 10H and English 11 IB recommended; English 11IB required for external assessments
Skill Level: This course is designed to meet the needs of students with above average or college capable language skills. It is open to any student intending to go to college and specifically meets the Language A (Higher Level) requirements for IB diploma candidates.

Semester two works will include: Dr. Faustus by Christopher Marlowe, Hamlet by William Shakespeare, The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde and The Crucible by Arthur Miller.
